MY WHO EXPERIENCE PART TWO
This is my second opinion piece as to why NZ should not allow the WHO to dictate how Governments should manage their infectious disease risks and provide overarching mandates regarding the Global management of infectious disease pandemics.
In my personal experience the WHO is a bureaucratic, academic, ineffective and reactive organisation when it comes to implementing Global healthcare programmes.
And this costs millions of lives.
For over thirty years I have been working in Hospitals in Africa and Asia putting in place systems to prevent the spread of Hospital Acquired Infections by reducing airborne transmission of Bacteria and Viruses because we know viruses like Sars and Covid are transmitted by airborne aerosols.
So why did it take the WHO two years to say that Covid is Airborne and instead tell the general population that if they sanitised their hands and stood two meters apart, they would be protected against Covid. https://lnkd.in/dFrNqbPM
This misinformation cost lives.
But not as many lives as the young children who died because of the WHO failure to listen to frontline healthcare workers who were saying the WHO recommended Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) treatment for Children with acute diarrheal diseases was causing preventable deaths.
In the early 80’s the WHO lauded the introduction of their recommended Oral Rehydration Solution formula, a simple mixture of salts and glucose to rehydrate kids with diarrhea and claimed that they were “saving millions of children lives.”
However independent researchers like myself and my colleagues in Nepal and India discovered that the concentration of sodium chloride and Glucose was nearly twice that required for the safe and efficacious treatment of diarrhea.
Despite decades of lobbying by frontline doctors and researchers in the developing world for more than two decades the WHO ignored the science and continued to recommend this toxic formulation which caused increased stool output, dehydration and millions of deaths globally.
Finally in 2022 we were successful in getting the WHO to change this toxic formula and they reported.
“The New formula will save millions of lives and the number of deaths will be reduced.”
When the WHO introduced their original too strong ORS formula they stated “This formula has proven effective and without any apparent side effects.”
Maybe I can be labelled as a conspiracy theorist but my personal experience is the WHO is a decadent incompetent Self serving organisation that I have learned to distrust.
The alternative is to take advice from WHO Panel co-chair and former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark who said it was “critical to have an empowered WHO”
Based on my personal experiences I think she’s wrong.
