Currently en route to New York, I was sitting on the first of three flights watching Ben Affleck in Argo, which he produced, directed and also acted in as a CIA agent involved in secreting a group of diplomats out of Tehran during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis. As the movie (which is very good) came to a close I turned to a music channel and decided to give Taylor Swift’s 1989 album a try. The very first song on the album was titled Welcome to New York. “That’s pretty uncanny” I thought as I pressed the play button, wondering how a song about New York by one of the most popular artists of our time could get past me. Then I realised why – I’m a year behind the times, courtesy Cambodia! Then she belted out the following lyrics, leaving me amazed not only at her talent and the catchy tune, but that this particular song would reveal itself to me on this particular journey!
Walking through a crowd, the village is aglow
Kaleidoscope of loud heartbeats under coats
Everybody here wanted something more
Searching for a sound we hadn’t heard before
And it said welcome to New York
It’s been waiting for you!
Welcome to New York, Welcome to New York
Welcome to New York
It’s been waiting for you!
Welcome to New York, Welcome to New York
It’s a new soundtrack, I could dance to this beat (beat) forevermore!
The lights are so bright, but they never blind me (me)
Welcome to New York
It’s been waiting for you!
Welcome to New York, Welcome to New York
When we first dropped our bags on apartment floors,
Took our broken hearts put them in a draw
Everybody here was someone else before
And you can want who you want
Boys and boys and girls and girls
Welcome to New York
It’s been waiting for you!
Welcome to New York, Welcome to New York
Like any great love, it keeps you guessing
Like any real love, it’s ever changing
Like any true love, it drives you crazy
But you know you wouldn’t change
Anything! Anything! Anything!
Welcome to New York
It’s been waiting for you!
Welcome to New York, Welcome to New York
Days ago I told Mum that I planned to turn Heart of New York onto my iPhone as my plane lands in the Big Apple. She suggested the lie in the lyrics, “flying in from London” was inappropriate for the occasion. Perhaps Taylor Swift has solved the problem? I’m downloading her onto my iPhone as I type this post!
For the next month this blog is going to have a Manhattan (and a little New Jersey) theme! See you when I get there!
Synchronicity! xx
