From 1967-1972 a top secret, highly classified weather modification campaign code named Operation Popeye launched over Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia by the US military. US Airforce planes seeded clouds with both silver iodide and lead iodide, resulting in an extension of the monsoon period in the targeted areas. The aim was to “flush out” the Viet Cong along the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Nearly 1,000 km of Australia’s east coast has been under coastal hazard warnings for some days, due to a tropical cyclone moving from the Coral Sea, south-west, for some days. It is said to have “started off life in an unusual way, born in the South Pacific as a triplet, alongside siblings Rae and Seru.“

The timing of Cyclone Alfred is interesting. The Chinese Communist Party established the Bureau of Weather Modification four decades ago. It now employs over 30,000 staff as a “weather national guard, ready at a moment’s notice to operate the more than 4,000 rocket launchers, 7,000 anti-aircraft guns and 30 aircraft to trigger downpours in dry areas that really need the rain.”

Days prior to Cyclone Alfred’s genesis in the Coral Sea, the People’s Liberation Army were sighted in the Torres Strait in Australia’s north-east, then in the Tasman Sea to the east of New South Wales (and west of New Zealand), where it was reported they were conducting “live fire-drills”.

Predictably, by the time the cyclone reached land, it was downgraded to a nothing-burger. Not before the population had been roller-coastered into fear-driven stay-at-home orders. Would a more suitable name have been Cyclone Xi?
